(Raleigh, N.C.) — State Treasurer Dale R. Folwell, CPA, applauded the work being done at Real Recovery Clinical Services in Asheville during a visit to the addiction treatment facility on Monday, July 25, with state Rep. Caleb Rudow, D-Buncombe.

“Every person has worth, and everyone deserves a second chance. Real Recovery offers effective treatments and services for substance use, not only for rehabilitation but in developing skills to cope with challenging circumstances that can lead to lifelong recovery,” Treasurer Folwell said. “Restoring dignity and motivation to those who have faced some of life’s darkest challenges helps them to experience the joy of achievement and upward mobility as productive North Carolinians.”

Treasurer Folwell was at Real Recovery as part of his continuing efforts to highlight the Department of State Treasurer’s (DST) Unclaimed Property Division (UPD). The treasurer presented a check for $13,342 to Real Recovery. UPD staff discovered the money during routine reviews of data in the system. The missing money had been diverted to the state’s escheats fund, maintained by DST.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to host North Carolina State Representative Rudow and Treasurer Folwell today at Real Recovery, a Pyramid Healthcare company. It was our pleasure to showcase the lifesaving mental health and substance use treatment available for the adult and adolescent residents of Asheville and surrounding communities, and we look forward to continuing to work closely with the state of North Carolina in the future,” said Katharina Zunk, vice president of operations.

NCCash.com is the repository for 17.6 million properties valued at $1.02 billion under DST’s custody awaiting return to the rightful owners. For the just completed fiscal year through June 30, UPD paid a record-breaking 178,857 claims totaling more than $105.1 million from NCCash. Part of that total has been disbursed through the new NCCash Match program, a no-hassle, expedited system that eliminated paperwork processing. For the just completed fiscal year, DST paid 102,157 claims totaling about $35.3 million.

Under state law, UPD receives and safeguards funds that are escheated, or turned over, to DST. The unclaimed property consists of bank accounts, wages, utility deposits, insurance policy proceeds, stocks, bonds and contents of safe deposit boxes that have been abandoned.
