On Thursday, October 19, 2017, North Carolina State Treasurer Dale R. Folwell, CPA, presented Peter Werbicki, CEO of The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, with a check from the Department’s unclaimed property fund owed to the organization totaling $16,137.10 at UPD’s booth at the North Carolina State Fair.

“We were pleased to have the opportunity today to help The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina receive this significant amount of unclaimed property,” State Treasurer Dale R. Folwell, CPA, said. “I often say we count the pennies and the paper clips at the Department of State Treasurer. Nobody knows about that better than the Food Bank, as every penny they get helps provide meals for those in need.  We’re happy to help reconnect the Food Bank, and all North Carolinians, with their missing pennies through the NC Cash program. I encourage all to visit NCCash.com to see if they, or someone they know, may have money waiting to be claimed free of charge.”

“We’re so grateful to receive this support,” said Peter Werbicki, President and CEO of the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. “This will allow the Food Bank to distribute an additional 80,000 meals to our friends and neighbors living in food insecure households.”

“This is wonderful news on Food Lion Hunger Relief Day at the State Fair,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “It provides a welcome boost on top of the canned food we are collecting for the Food Bank.”

The Department will have a booth open for the duration of the State Fair where North Carolinians are encouraged to search UPD’s database to see if they have unclaimed property potentially owed to them. North Carolinians can also visit NCCash.com at any time to search the Department’s database of unclaimed property.

This year, 506 claims have been generated so far at UPD’s booth at the State Fair totaling $113,235.50. (Numbers through Wednesday, October 18, 2017).
