Department of State Treasurer Hires Ty Powers as Investment Director for Multi-Strategy Assets

Ty Powers has been hired as an Investment Director for the Department of State Treasurer’s (DST) Investment Management Division (IMD), State Treasurer Brad Briner announced today.  

“Ty has a strong background in investment management, including previously working here at the state level. He will serve a critical role as we continue to re-align our long-term investment objectives, including eliminating our pension deficits,” Treasurer Briner said.   

In this newly created role, Powers will manage the multi-strategy asset class, including customized partnerships, direct investments and co-investments. He will report to Chief Investment Officer Kevin SigRist.   

Powers has over 25 years of experience in investment management. Prior to re-joining the state, he was Director of Asset Allocation at Investors Trust Company in Chapel Hill, an investment advisory firm serving high net-worth clients. Before that he served as a portfolio manager in IMD, focused on credit, real assets, and multi-strategy investments. Previously, Powers was co-portfolio manager and director of hedge fund research for an investment firm in Raleigh, was a senior equity analyst at a long-short equity firm in Durham and served as an associate equity analyst on the sell side in Richmond, Va. He began his career in private wealth management in Baltimore and Washington, D.C.  

Powers earned a B.A. in economics from Washington & Lee University and an MBA with a concentration in investment management from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In addition, he holds the Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA) designation.
