Treasurer Cowell and College Foundation of North Carolina Launch College Finance Tour
RALEIGH, N.C. – Treasurer Janet Cowell along with the College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC) kicked off a College Finance Tour earlier this week at North Carolina A&T State University.
“College marks the beginning of a lot of things – managing money independently is one of them,” explained Treasurer Cowell. “The reality is that many students understand chemistry, physics and literature, but fall short on mastering basic personal finance skills like credit.”
The College Finance Tour will connect Treasurer Cowell and CFNC with students for conversations around managing finances. It also presents an opportunity to highlight resources in the community that can help students navigate their new financial responsibilities.
“Talking with students about money at this point in their life, when they are about to make those tough decisions, can be critical,” Cowell added.
Cowell and the Department of State Treasurer have partnered with CFNC to share a new tool “Financial Basics for High School and Beyond” with students. The tool packages personal finance fundamentals into an online course designed with young adults in mind.
According to a 2012 study of first-year students, no one scored an “A” on basic personal finance competencies.
Cowell plans to visit colleges and university throughout the state over the next year as part of the College Finance Tour. The tour’s next stop will be on campus at North Carolina Central on September 29th.
