Treasurer Cowell Returns $146,000 on Greensboro's FOX 8

NC Cash program finds unclaimed cash for Triad citizens during “Claim Your Cash” telethon

GREENSBORO – State Treasurer Janet Cowell made an appearance yesterday on Greensboro’s Fox 8 News for the “Claim Your Cash” telethon. During the two-hour telethon, the Department of State Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Division returned more than $146,000 to callers from the Triad area.

“It’s not uncommon for people to move to a new address, forget about a lock box, or get the numbers switched on their zip code. When this happens, money often gets lost in the shuffle,” Cowell said. “Being able to return this money to its rightful owners is really one of the most fun parts of my job.”

Greensboro resident Bobbie Mitchell, one of more than 700 callers to the show, found $800 owed to her.

“I’m just so glad I had the television on. My husband said, ‘Just give them a call. You never know.’” Mitchell said. “This money came just in time for Christmas, and I can’t wait to spend it on my grandbabies.”

Unclaimed property consists of bank accounts, wages, utility deposits, stocks, bonds, and other property types that have been abandoned due to a loss of communication or oversight. The Department returned more than $41 million in unclaimed property during the year ending June 30, 2012.

Additionally, the Department returned more than $400,000 at the 2012 North Carolina State Fair Oct. 11-21.
