State Health Plan Not Affected by Newkirk Cyber-Attack
Newkirk Products, Inc., a vendor that issues member ID cards for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC), was the victim of a cyber-attack discovered on July 6, 2016. This incident affected at least six Newkirk clients, including BCBSNC.
The issue affects only customers in the Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement and Medicare Part D plans who had that coverage with BCBSNC from 2013 through 2016. The State Health Plan was not affected, nor were BCBSNC systems impacted.
Information that could have been accessed includes name, dependent names, mailing address, type of plan, member number and group ID number. None of BCBSNC’s customers’ financial information, medical claims information or Social Security numbers were accessed. Newkirk is working with federal law enforcement to investigate the incident, and the investigation has not found any evidence that any personal information has been used inappropriately.
Newkirk is sending letters to affected members and is offering two years of free identity protection and restoration services. For more information, affected customers are advised to call 855-303-9773 or go to http://newkirkproductsfacts.com
