Member Profile: Essie Perry
After seeing two World Wars, and watching the world evolve for more than a century and traveling to 48 out of the 50 states, Mrs Essie Perry (pictured above) looks back on her last 106 years by stating: “I have very few complaints.” Essie Liles Perry was born on September 16, 1903 in Halifax County, NC. She spent 40 
years teaching in seven different counties throughout North Carolina and has been retired for more years then she worked. Things were a lot different when she first started teaching. Her salary in her first year of teaching was $93.33 for eight months of work.
Essie Perry’s contributions to and membership in the Retirement System has served her well. She still draws a retirement benefit, which is much more than the $93 she made for her first eight months of teaching.
