The North Carolina Women & Money Conferences are FREE sessions that focus on money management, retirement and investment strategies for women of all ages, economic backgrounds, and levels of financial knowledge. They are designed to address the unique financial issues women face in their work and personal lives, which impact their retirement and put them at higher risk for poverty later in life.

Many women face specific financial obstacles they must overcome in order to live comfortably and plan for their futures. These include:

  • Half of all women work in traditionally female, relatively low paid jobs with half the average pension benefits that men receive.
  • Women have more sporadic work histories as a result of having cared for children and aging parents.
  • Women live longer than men, requiring them to make their money last longer, even though they earn less.
  • 3 out of 4 working women earn less than $30,000 per year and 9 out of 10 earn less than $40,000 per year.
  • The U.S. has the greatest percentage of elderly women in poverty of all the major industrialized nations.
  • A widowed woman is four times more likely, and a single or divorced woman five times more likely, to live in poverty after retirement than a married woman.
  • A 1999 survey found that 41% of all women ages 25 to 55 are worried that they will live at or near the poverty level in retirement, and only 18% of all women said they know a great deal about how to plan for retirement.
