The N.C. Department of State Treasurer, Human Resources Office is open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. To apply for a position, complete and submit a State Application for Employment (PD-107).

  • A separate application must be submitted for each listed vacancy. The vacancy number must be included on the application. If a single application is submitted for multiple vacancies, it will only be considered for the first choice listed on the application. Applications containing no vacancy number will be considered unsolicited.
  • All applications submitted for Accounting or Financial positions with requirements for semester hours in accounting or finance must include official transcripts showing the number of semester hours in accounting.
  • Degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Description of Work:THIS IS AN ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT SPECIALIST POSITION AND IS POSTED AT THE ADVANCED LEVEL…

The incumbent in this position will work under the general supervision of a manager in the Benefits Processing Section of the Retirement Systems Division.

This position is directly responsible for ensuring that Retirement System members meet appropriate North Carolina law-based eligibility requirements for short-term disability benefits, extended short-term disability benefits, long-term disability benefits and disability retirement benefits. Incumbent will verify eligibility, perform service credit checks, and calculate complex benefit awards dependent upon individual salary, personal data, and specific factors as provided by NC Retirement Laws on disability particular to seven different retirement systems.

This position will be responsible for correspondence generated to applicants, various employer requests, internal and external requests for information, and other correspondence related to the position’s duties. The occupant of this position may also be responsible for advising, mentoring and reviewing the work of other employees with responsibilities within the process.

This is a high volume work environment, and other related duties may be assigned. Occasionally, the incumbent will be expected to participate in team-based organizational improvement efforts in support of the Division's Mission and strategic goals.
 
Competencies/Knowledges, Skills & Abilities:Knowledge-Program: Program knowledge includes acceptable interpretations, applications, and allowable exceptions of written policies and procedures Requires knowledge of organizational structure, functions, and services, programs, office procedures and practices. (A)
Information/Records Administration: Performs research, data collection and analysis of information, and report writing. Utilizes, reconciles, and manipulates data from different internal and external software systems. Applies an in-depth knowledge of a variety of complex processes and procedures. (A)
Office Technology: Selects, understands and fully applies a variety of features in software programs, databases, information systems, and specialized equipment. (J)
Problem Solving: Independently resolves and/or develops recommendations for unprecedented issues and problems. Problem resolution requires some interpretation of policy and procedures. Serves as a resource for others in resolving unprecedented, non-standard issues and problems. Assumes responsibilities for and manages the results of decisions. Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:Graduation from high school and one year of related office experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
 
Management Preferences:Experience with Disability Income Plan of NC or Disability Retirement process in NC.
