Charles L. Hinton

Charles Lewis Hinton was a major of the militia, planter, legislator and, in 1839, became State Treasurer. Hinton represented his native Wake County in both the House of Commons and the Senate. He also was a member of the commissions for rebuilding the State Capitol and for building the State Hospital for the Insane. He served as Treasurer for 11 years in two different terms. He also served as a commissioner for sale of the Indian lands and was a trustee of the University of North Carolina for 28 years.
He was born at the Oaks Plantation in Wake County where he was buried in 1861.
